What is Lutein?
A carotenoid derived from Tagetes erecta (marigold) flowers, standardised to ≥20% lutein. One of over 600 naturally occurring carotenoids, and among the most widely supplemented.
Why Tagetes erecta L. Flower Extract (≥20% Lutein)?
Derived from Tagetes erecta (marigold) flowers and standardised to ≥20% lutein by HPLC analysis — the consistent, measurable potency that separates a precision ingredient from a commodity extract. Marigold-derived lutein is the form used across the published clinical evidence base.
About Lutein
Concentrated in the macula
Lutein is a carotenoid naturally and selectively accumulated in the macula — the central high-acuity region of the retina — where it forms part of the macular pigment.
Present in the macular pigment
The macular pigment, which contains lutein and the naturally co-occurring zeaxanthin, absorbs light in the 415–455nm wavelength range. This is the form used across the published clinical evidence base.
Also found in the brain
Lutein is also found in brain tissue, making it the subject of growing research interest in nutritional neuroscience.
